Shiregreen residents came together on Saturday (16th) at a special event to mark the re-launch of a much-loved local community centre as it was officially re-opened by Harry Harpham, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.
The event at the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre celebrated the completion of extensive refurbishments, carried out by Beck Primary School which now manages the site.
A centre in the heart of the community
The centre, which receives funding and support from Sanctuary Housing, is a well used facility in the heart of the community. Training courses, toddler groups, digital drop-in sessions and under-twos classes are just some of the wide ranging activities on offer. Also located in the centre is an arts and crafts café managed by SOAR.
Members of the community and local partners, including Best Start Communities Count, NHS Smokefree, SOAR, voluntary groups and Sanctuary, gathered at the event to see the new refurbishments and learn more about community projects in their neighbourhood.
Harry Harpham MP said: “The success of the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre is a shining example of what can be achieved when the whole community and local partners such as Sanctuary and Beck School join forces.
“The centre is an important hub for local residents and the first class refurbishment works that have taken place here mean that it will remain at the very heart of Shiregreen’s community for years to come.
Julie Fabian, from the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre, commented: “After such a long time of being closed due to the refurbishment, I am delighted that we are now re-open and once again can continue to support the community by providing a place where we all come together with a range of groups and courses.”
The refurbishment has seen the building split into two separate areas: one side houses the school’s new provision for two year olds, ‘Little Beck’; the other side of the building is sub-leased to the Neighbourhood Centre Committee, with this section now known as the Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre.
